Most definitely the %u201cCrown Jewel%u201d in the historical treasure here on Amelia Island. It is easy to lose yourself in this beautiful 1,121-acre recreational and natural paradise with magnificent live oaks. On and Off-road biking and hiking on miles of nature trails, saltwater fishing, shell-hunting (you might even find the occasional shark tooth), and picnicking. This is also the only place on Amelia Island that offers overnight camping. The fort itself was built in 1869 during the Civil War- era but was never completed. The fort did house a garrison of Federal troops through 1869, except for a brief period in 1861 when it was occupied by Confederate troops. You can still see the Civil War-Era cannons placed on the ramparts. Entrance into the Fort is by way of the Museum & Gift Shop. For more information, contact the Ranger%u2019s Office at 904-277-7274 Amelia Island Lighthouse.Florida%u2019s oldest lighthouse was built in 1820 on the hill overlooking Egans Creek, the highest point on Amelia Island. The site is open to the public on Saturdays only between 11 am and 2 pm. Private tours can also be arranged through the Recreation Center.
